Lapwing Poster
Vanellus vanellus, the Northern Lapwing or Green Plover
National bird of Ireland.
A beautiful, yet endangered ground nesting bird of wetland & farmland. Their apparently monochromatic plumage actually has beautiful iridescent colours when seen in detail.
In spring the males rapidly tumble & zig-zag through the air (photos left & right) whilst calling out to mates and rivals. - This call gives them their other name the “Peewit”.
Pairs then ‘nest’ using a scrape in the ground lined with vegetation. Once the chicks hatch they will be taught to forage for insects amongst soft, damp or waterlogged ground
